Hi Cindy
We had a great trip.
Please send my thanks to Abraham, for the Fly fishing lesson. Wow it was great getting a lesson from such a great Angler. Also thanks to Betsy for being such a great hostess. Lets not forget Olympia for her graciousness.
P.S. I have a great idea that would be fun for the lodge, which is to invite all guests to mail you photos of their fishing experience and you all could create a board or use a wall somewhere to make a collage of all the great photos and great experiences that would be a lot of fun for everyone to view!!!!!

Fishing Report

On a recent trip to Costa Rica I had the opportunity to catch my first Pacific Sailfish on Fly.  Pacific Sailfish are not only much larger than their Atlantic cousins but to my amazement are extremely aggressive and challenging, especially on fly.  In March of 2008, I was treated to an exciting fishing adventure, courtesy of Abraham and Betsy Bullard, owners of Golfito Sailfish Rancho which is located on a remote stretch of Pacific shoreline.  I departed from Ft. Lauderdale at 11:30 in the morning and arrived at the lodge just after 5:00 pm. The 2 hour and 40 minute flight went directly into San Jose, the capitol city.  I then transferred to a 40 minute domestic flight that landed on a jungle airstrip in the picturesque village of Golfito.  A 15 minute boat ride completed the trip to the lodge which is situated in a tropical rainforest at the base of a steep mountain.
Golfito Sailfish Rancho is considered a second home to many notable sportsman, and it was there that I had the pleasure of meeting accomplished angler Flip Pallot for the first time.  Had I been there one week earlier I would have had the chance to fish alongside of the legendary Stu Apte.  The jungle above is dense and waterfalls cascade down steep cliffs less than 20-feet from the base of the lodge.  Howler monkeys roam the forest and share the canopy with toucans and macaws. The accommodations are comfortable and roomy, and each overlook the ocean.  Beyond the porch, hummingbirds hover among tropical flowers.   Although the lodge is closed briefly for the rainy season, many different species of fish are available to anglers year round, including blue and black marlin, roosterfish, snook, dorado, wahoo, and tuna.  Live bait is abundant.  I could hardly wait until morning.
The captain and mate were well versed in the art of flyfishing and the bite had been good in recent days.  Betsy had prepared a 14 weight outfit, tipped with a custom fly tied by her husband and flyfishing guru Abraham.  After a 25-minute run offshore we deployed three teasers–designed to raise sailfish (and marlin) to the surface and draw them in close enough for presentation of the fly.  It took less than 20 minutes for the first "lit-up" sail to enter the spread.  The captain and mate orchestrated a perfect tease, gradually pulling the hookless lures closer to the boat and bringing the excited sailfish to within casting range.  Just as my fly hit the water the last teaser was jerked away, leaving only my fly inches behind the sail’s bill.  Noticeably unsettled by the situation the sail turned and took the fly frantically. I struck sharply and could feel that the hook had hit something solid.  It was at that moment that I realized that one of my biggest dreams was in the process of coming true–my first sail on fly.   The sailfish burned out spectacularly on the surface, was brought alongside, revived and released in good condition.
In 2-1/2 days we raised at least 15 sails, missing most of a hot afternoon bite due to a 2-1/2 hour battle with a monster–but that was only part of the story.  From time to time we observed more than 40 sails cruising just below the surface, their large dorsal fins fully extended and visible often from a hundred yards away. With the water being so calm, the ocean seemed to resemble a gigantic fish tank. We occasionally took advantage of the opportunity to pitch live baits from the bow using 12-pound spinning gear.  We had a ball!

Betsy and Abraham and their staff are not only enthusiastic, kind and sincere, but are extremely knowledgeable and conservation minded and do everything possible to release every fish unharmed.  Each fish is billed and the hook is removed prior to release.  No hooks are ever intentionally left in the fish.  Circle hooks, which lodge in the corner of the mouth to minimize injury, are mandatory.  Costa Rican fishing laws and regulations maintain a healthy fishery for the benefit of everyone who enjoys the sport.
Having secretly learned of two recent pending world records on snook, my next trip will definitely be longer so that I can have more time to fish in each of several rivers that empty in to the Golfo Dulce.
This was a trip of a lifetime and one I will never forget.

Incredible!  Absolutely best fishing trip I have ever had ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.  Going to try and get back there sooner than next year, if I can get enough stuff off my plate.
Even though the fishing was slow the last several days of the week, I just couldn’t get enough!  I gotta have more!  The Rancho has ruined me for other kinds of saltwater fishing!

Hi Cindy,
I would like to thank all the staff at the Rancho for making my recent trip so enjoyable. Capt. Maudiel is among the best I have fished with. Here is a photo of the huge sailfish he put me on March 2nd. I got two more and one of them was on the fly. I have great memories of my second stay at your splendid lodge.

I want to thank you for the best vacation of my life.  My husband, Terry & I had the best vacation we have ever taken.  Everyone had told me how wonderful the Rancho is – but nothing can really prepare you for just how amazing it is.  Captain Enrique & Ronald worked so hard to find fish and help us hook them & land them.  I was a complete novice and they made it easy for me.  Olympia & Norman run the lodge like clock work.  I could not have asked for anything more.  The morning I left, I actually cried.  I have already e-mailed Brian to let him know that Terry & I will be part of his 2008 trip!  I’m already counting the days.

WATCH OUT GOLFITO::: THE HORSLEY GROUP IS PACKING AND READY TO GO!!

Brian,

I have furiously been trying to get my weight up to the 250# limit, with some success, concurrent with my efforts to reduce baggage weight to 22 lbs., with less success.

I am putting the finishing touches today on a keyfob which looks a lot like a Tibor Gulfstream fishing reel, but now find my blue jean pockets are too small for the keys and the my new fob.  I tried enlarging one of the pockets, but the extra thread actually increased the pants weight a bit.

I found that my new walking stick did not work well unless I also wrapped a 10 wt. along with the 12 wt.  By putting one pair of my socks on each end before wrapping it all in duct tape, I was able to get my bag weignt down another 4 ounces.  I also found that if I dropped shaving cream in favor of #120 sun block that I was able to get the total wt. down from 38# to 37.2#.

I am now wondering if Delta will look askance at my use of large fishhooks as piercings as possible terrorist weapons.  I understand that the metal detectors will go nuts, of course, but am hoping they will not make me take my pants off to see all of my decorations.  If I am able to embed all the hooks, that reduces the weight down to 36.4#.  Do any of you have any experience with such measures?

I also found that the pink poppers I got from John Martyn look great on my fishing hat, but I am hoping they will let me take it off before the pre-flight weigh-in, as it takes my clothed weight right up to 250.2#.  However, removing the poppers from my bag gets it down to 36.352#.

I do have one item in my bag, the removal of half of which would solve my entire weight problem.  I am wondering if my roomie, Stuart, could carry half of my inflatable playboy playmate and the plastic glue kit in his bag?

Or, I am wondering if I show Sansa that I got myself down from 250# to 227# body weight, just for this one round trip, if they would give me extra credit and allow me to bring an extra 14.352 lbs on board, thereby actually freeing up 8.65# !  That seems fair doesn’t it?  Who should I contact, Brian?
My flight arrives SJ from Hotlanta at 1:45pm Sunday. Hoping to see you all at the hotel Sunday with or without my fishing tackle.  I’m 5-10, curly hair, and have hooks in my ears.
Harry

I AM GOING TO POST THIS ON THE GSR WEBSITE. MAY BE GOOD ADVICE TO ALL !!

HOPE ALL OF YOU HAVE A GREAT TIME !!!

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND ME SOME PICTURES FOR THE WEBSITE TO GO ALONG WITH YOUR FISHING REPORTS !!!!

CINDY

Cindy,

Oh, my GOD!  Now you want me to add a CAMERA to my bag!

Hmm, maybe if I inflate my bag with helium and seal it up real good, before they weigh it…

Or, maybe one of us weighs in a more than 250# and has to buy the extra ticket… Can I have the carryon allowance for the extra seat?  That’s assuming he weighs less than 500.

Cindy-
Thanks again for making this trip such a success. Our guys managed to land 3 Marlin, numerous sails, and even a few roosters and mahi mahi. The highlight of the trip for me was the pic of my Dad and me with his first ever sail, which he landed with just a little assist from me. Olympia and the staff help make Golfito one of the true, magical fishing spots on Earth, and the fishing only adds to what amounts to the finest destination for bluewater fly fishing around!

Cindy:
As a commentary, I visited Golfito Sailfish Rancho for the first time December of 2004. My son, Beau, had
been there once before with my father 10 or 12 years earlier. My father had been to the Rancho a number of times.
In 2004, we caught 8 or 9 Sails, 3 small snappers, several dorados, a roosterfish and a small tuna in 4 days of fishing. Captain Sander was our skipper and did a great job.
In December of 2005, I returned with a friend from Burlington, NC, Joe Farrell. We fished 4 days and got 8 sails, 8 dorados and asmall roosterfish. The rooster fish was caught onlight tackle and took about 40 minutes to bring in…what a rush! We fished with Captain Ronnie.
We also caught three dorados "at one time". Joe hooked one on light tackle, and then I hooked up on one with the regular tackle and before he could land his, I hooked up again. We landed both about the same time. It was like a Chinese Fire Drill! The picture is of me, Captain Ronnie and Joe.
Needless to say we had a great time.
When I told Joe that I was going back in February2007, he said that he was coming too…NOT "can I come", NOT "is there room for me", but that he was coming too! Another two friends said that they wanted to come as well since they had heard so much about it from us. So in February, I will be making my third trip.
While none of us a great fishermen, the trip, experience, food and Olympia make everything worthwhile.
This will not be my last trip!
Regards,
Mac Beard
